hard-disk if they are installed from this hard-disk -
run "setup.exe" from the local directory after copying the
entire CD-ROM under a separate directory)
    * At least Pentium III 600MHz processor
    * At least 256 MB of RAM
    * At least 40 MB of free hard disk space
    * Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Internet Explorer Browser

2. Installation Notes for Win 98/2000/XP/7

    Windows 98/2000/XP/7

The CD-ROM collection has an autorun setup or can be
installed manually by running "setup.exe" from the CD-ROM.

To install manually, open the CD-ROM drive in 'My Computer'
and double-click on setup.exe or use 'Add/Remove Programs'
    from the control panel

To remove, use 'Uninstall ...' from the Programs menu or
use 'Add/Remove Programs' from the control panel

It is possible that you have to run the Windows Internet
Connection Wizard -- even if you are not connected to Internet
to run the collection (see 4.). In case you are not connected
to the Internet choose to access Internet through a LAN
    (Local Area Network) connection.

    Windows 2000/XP/7

Follow the above instructions for Windows 98/2000/XP/7. It
is recommended that the software is installed while you
are logged in as the "Administrator" as Mozilla Firefox and
other programs cannot be configured from the "user group" accounts.

3. Running a Greenstone Digital Library

Once the Greenstone collection is installed the name of
the collection appears in the "Programs" menu (accessed
    through the Windows "Start" button)

The collection name itself is a sub-menu and expands
    into three items:

        Collection Name
        Help - Utilities - Uninstall
Help ; a help and technical specifications file
            Technical Support
            Uninstall collection

    3.1 Preferred start: "Collection Name"

To run the collection, select the
    'The International Pharmacopoeia' entry
under the Programs menu (Windows 98/2000/XP/7) and select
    'The International Pharmacopoeia'.

This version of the software is extremely flexible and
automatically adapts to many different computer
configurations: standalone, networked, server, default web
browser (Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox) and so on.

You can select Internet Explorer to be your default web
browser in the "Browser Selection and Settings" menu
in the "Enter Library" window when you start a collection.

==================================================================

4. Solutions to Problems and Error Messages - Fixing sockets
and Proxy server problems - Running the Windows Internet
    Connection Wizard

    4.1 Selecting Internet Explorer

In the Greenstone Digital Library Software window
(i.e. the window containing the 'Enter Library' button)
    select "Browser Selection and Settings".

Then select "Settings..." from this menu. A dialog box
opens which gives you the option to select the browser
you want to use. If Internet Explorer is installed on your
computer you may select it from the list to use it.

    4.2 Problems accessing the collection

If the network parameters on your computer are not
properly configured, error messages will result when you
run the standard Greenstone software and it is not
    possible to access the collection.

Windows 2000, XP and 7 installation problems

Follow the above instructions for Windows 98/2000/XP/7. It
is recommended that the software is installed while you
are logged in as the "Administrator" as Mozilla Firefox and other
programs cannot be configured from the "user group" accounts.

Problems with sockets. Solution: run the Windows Internet
        Connection Wizard

On some (mainly) Windows NT (2000 and XP) computers we have had reports of
neither version of the Greenstone software running. The error
message reported is a failure to establish a socket
    connection.

The solution to this problem is to run the Windows Internet
Connection Wizard -- even if you use a standalone PC and
    are not connected to Internet.

The wizard is located under the Windows "start"
        button:
        Programs -> Accessories -> Communication

        1. Answer the questions asked by the wizard in a way
that best fits your computer setup (for example,
choose Local Area Network (LAN) if you use your
computer standalone with no dial-up modem for
        Internet access).

        2. Once this is completed, the wizard will prompt
you to reboot the computer. This done, start the
        collection once more.

        3. When your web browser is accessed you will be
prompted by the same wizard to answer a few more
questions (but these are the last ones).
Answer them again according to your situation
and then, finally the starting page to your
        Greenstone collection will appear!

4.3 Proxy server problems with laptops

Problems will also arise if your browser has a proxy
server set but your computer is physically disconnected
from the network. (This often occurs with laptop computers).
A dialog box will inform you of this after a 20 second
timeout. If this occurs, alter your browser's preferences
to avoid using the proxy server. Alternatively, install
the Mozilla Firefox browser from the CD-ROM. Alternatively,
select Internet Explorer as your default browser and run the
Windows Internet Connection Wizard -- even if you use a
standalone PC and are not connected to Internet.

Problems caused by the use of an automatic
        configuration script

On some computers the browser may be configured to use an
automatic configuration script. In these cases, should problems
arise with accessing the collection, the script must be changed
in order to allow the local HTTP requests, and not to be
    redirected to the proxy.

The automatic configuration script basically contains a function
called FindProxyForURL(), where it's decided if the request is
forwarded to a certain proxy or not. A sample solution for this
problem via FindProxyForURL() function is displayed below:

    function FindProxyForURL(url, host)
    {
        ...
        if (host == "127.0.0.1")
            return "DIRECT";
        ...
    }

5. Internet Browsers

Greenstone Digital Libraries are read using an Internet browser
as Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Explorer.

    Installing Mozilla Firefox

The Mozilla Firefox browser included on the CD-ROM is
compatible with Greenstone and can be installed after setup.

If you were supplied with a customised browser by your ISP,
DO NOT REMOVE IT when installing Mozilla Firefox, because you
will need it to access the Internet. Be sure to install
Mozilla Firefox in a different directory

    Other Browsers:

Other browsers may be incompatible with the Greenstone
software - particularly ones that have been customised
for use by an Internet Service Provider (ISP).

If you find that your browser does not display the
Greenstone Digital Library properly, simply install
Mozilla Firefox browser from Greenstone CD-ROM, by choosing
'Install Mozilla Firefox ...' in 'Browser Selection and Settings'
    menu from Greenstone window.

If your default browser is incompatible with Greenstone but
you want to keep it for accessing the Internet, you will
have to use a browser other than your default browser to
view a Greenstone library. To do this:

In the Greenstone Digital Library Software dialog box
(i.e. the box containing the 'Enter Library' button)
select 'Settings...' from "Browser Selection and Settings"
        menu.

Another dialog box opens which gives you the option
of which browser to use. If Mozilla Firefox or
Internet Explorer are installed on your computer you may
select them from the list to use them.

To use another browser select 'Other Browser' and
enter the name of the browsers' executable in the
        text box.

    Proxy server problems with browsers

Problems will arise if your browser has a proxy server set
but your computer is physically disconnected from the
network. (This often occurs with laptop computers).
A dialog box will inform you of this after a 20 second
    timeout.

If this occurs, alter your browser's preferences to avoid
using the proxy server. Alternatively, install the Mozilla
Firefox browser from the CD-ROM as described above.

6. Technical Support

Please report any problems installing or running Greenstone
    Digital Library Software.

There is a bug report form under 'Technical Support' in the
    Program menu (Windows 98/2000/XP/7).

This form is also provided as Support.htm in the top level
    directory of the CD-ROM.
